1. Archimedes' Principle

When an object is partially or fully submerged in a fluid, it experiences an upward buoyant force equal to the weight of the fluid displaced by it.

Fbuoyant = ρ × V × g
  • ρ (rho): Fluid Density
  • V: Submerged Volume of Object
  • g: Gravitational Acceleration (9.8 m/s²)

2. Laws of Flotation

A body floats in a fluid if the weight of the displaced liquid equals the total weight of the body.

  • Floating Condition: Density of Object < Density of Fluid
  • Sinking Condition: Density of Object > Density of Fluid
  • Real World Applications:
    • 🚢 Ocean Liners & Steel Cargo Ships
    • 🧊 Icebergs floating in polar waters
    • 🎈 Hot Air Balloons altering buoyant mass

3. Concept of Buoyancy

Buoyancy (Upthrust) is the net upward force exerted by a fluid opposing the gravitational pull on an immersed object.

FUpthrust = WeightFluid Displaced
  • It causes objects submerged in water to feel significantly lighter.
  • Key Determinants: Density of the fluid & Submerged Volume.
